Drone Safety & Operational Compliance
Last Updated: February 2026
At Cheshire Drone Inspection & Mapping (CDIM), safety is the foundation of every flight. We operate in full accordance with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations and the 2026 Drone Code. This document outlines our commitment to legal, safe, and professional aerial operations.
1. Pilot Qualifications & Registration
All CDIM remote pilots are professionally trained and hold the necessary legal credentials required by the CAA:
Operator ID: Our organization is registered as a UAS Operator. Our ID is clearly displayed on all aircraft in accordance with CAA requirements.
Flyer ID: Every pilot has passed the CAA theory examination, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of airspace safety and privacy laws.
A2 CofC: Where required for "Near People" operations, our pilots hold an A2 Certificate of Competency, allowing for increased operational flexibility in urban environments.
A list of all our Remote Pilots and their CAA registered details are below:
Matthew Tweats - Operator ID: GBR-OP-7PYR7ZS9RMDL - Expiry: 16/01/2027
2. 2026 Hardware Standards
We invest in the latest technology to ensure 100% compliance with the 2026 regulatory overhaul:
UK Class Markings: We utilise aircraft with official UK0–UK6 class markings, ensuring our equipment meets the latest manufacturing safety standards.
Direct Remote ID: In compliance with the January 1, 2026 mandate, our drones broadcast a digital "Remote ID" signal (location, altitude, and Operator ID), providing total transparency to authorities.
Night Visibility: For low-light or night inspections, all our aircraft are fitted with mandatory flashing green strobe lighting to maintain high visibility. Note: night flights are generally not permitted by CDIM, however, we may operate in darkness if it is absolutely necessary.
3. Insurance & Liability
Operating a drone commercially without the correct insurance is illegal. CDIM is protected by:
EC 785/2004 Compliant Insurance: We hold specialist commercial UAV insurance that meets the strict requirements of European and UK aviation law.
Public Liability: We carry a minimum of £5M in Public Liability insurance to protect our clients, their assets, and the public.
4. Operational Safety Protocol
Every flight follows a strict safety workflow:
Pre-Flight Site Assessment: We check for airspace restrictions (FRZs), local hazards, and weather conditions using live aviation data and instruments available to the Remote Pilots (e.g., industry specific apps, anemometers etc.).
Risk Assessment: A site-specific risk assessment is completed before the first takeoff.
Visual Line of Sight (VLOS): All operations are conducted within the pilot's direct line of sight to ensure immediate obstacle avoidance.
Dynamic Safety: The Pilot in Command (PIC) has the final authority to abort any flight if conditions (weather or site-based) become unsafe. You can view our T&Cs here which outline this in detail.
5. Privacy & Data Protection
We adhere to the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 (Amended 2025/2026). Our "Privacy by Design" approach ensures:
No targeted capture of uninvolved persons or private property.
Data is stored on encrypted drives and handled according to our Privacy Policy.
